Toy Recalls Continue

This week seemed no different  from the past several weeks...many toy recalls due to lead paint.  There was however, one recall that was astonishing.  Aqua Dots were recalled.  This recall was extremely bothersome as a parent. These beads apparently contain a substance found in a date rape drug. When swallowed by children, this chemical can and has caused children to fall into a coma.
CPSC has received two reports over the past several days of children swallowing Aqua Dots. A 20-month-old child swallowed several dozen beads. He became dizzy and vomited several times before slipping into a comatose state for a period of time, was hospitalized, and has since fully recovered. A second child also vomited and slipped into a comatose state and was hospitalized for five days.
What on earth.??? This craft kit had been voted  one of the  best  toys.  In fact, the day before the  recall was  announced, my children and I were playing with it. Between the lead paint  recalls and the strange substances used in toys, it is truly becoming increasingly difficult to feel secure in  knowing your children will be  safe with the toys they are using.  It seems parents just have  to be  very aware, and try to keep informed about  the various recalls...as much as you can be.  One idea we can offer is to sign up for email alerts  from the consumer product safety  commission.

Toy recalls

Here we are  again discussing the numerous toy recalls and child items that have occurred over the past few  weeks.  The Family Dollar Store recalled Halloween pails due to  unsafe levels of lead paint. Jo-Ann stores recalled children's toy garden tools also due to the  unsafe levels of lead paint. Fisher Price  has now added the Go Diego Go boats to their recall list, again  due to the  unsafe levels of lead paint.  Dollar Tree stores recalled children's jewelry for....yes....lead paint hazards. Good grief...with the number of children's items that have been placed in the marketplace and have needed to be recalled due  to safety issues... it is just a  matter of time before we start to really  learn the number of children  affected whether through actual toy litigation or other means. But something  needs to be done.  It is nearly impossible to buy a child a toy without worrying if somehow the product you just purchased contains unsafe levels of lead, or  to fear that somehow it was a toy that was actually included in the recall but happened to somehow  miss being pulled from the shelf for some reason.  It is a terrible feeling as a parent to constantly  be  unsure if what you are giving your child could in fact hurt them. Brands that were once "trusted" aren't any longer. It is truly unnerving.

Mattel's Latest Toy Recall

Mattel issued yet another round of recalls.  This recall involved toys that may contain lead paint as well as toys that have  magnets that cause serious digestive problems if children swallow them. The recall includes the popular "Cars" characters, Polly Pockets and  more.  Please view the latest recall notices for more information, and please be extremely cautious. If you think your child may have been exposed to lead paint please consult with your child's doctor.  We will be one of the millions of families combing through our toys determining whether or not what we have was affected by the massive recalls.
